Basketball
What a day! What a year!! County Finalists with not one team, not even two teams, but three basketball teams in the one year!!! It’s unheard of in Colaiste Na Toirbhirtes sporting history!! What an achievement at u16, u 14 and 1st yr levels!
Today was an unbelievable day. Our first yr team, undefeated all season, kept their clean sheet despite Blarney digging deep and testing the grit of our girls in the final. They played some fabulous basketball and dominated the boards while also working hard in defence. As first years, to be crowned County Champions can only signal what a talented team they are and what a promising future they have ahead of themselves. Congratulations to all the team and to their coach Mark Scannell on a great result.
This was followed by our u14 team who took on St. Mary’s Macroom in the next final. What a game! There were great highs, followed by some gut wrenching lows! It was a physical battle but also a mental one as baskets were traded and the score lines swung from side to side. The atmosphere was electric and the band of supporters that travelled were loud in their cheering! Passes were intercepted, shots were scored, and our girls were tested. It was only in the dying minutes that the Macroom girls managed to inch ahead and with the clock on their side, the ran out as winners on the final buzzer. It was a tough loss considering we had beaten them in the pool stage but at the same time reminds our girls what is possible.
Both the 1st yr and 2nd yr teams now have the double honour of representing Colaiste Na Toirbhirte in the upcoming All Ireland qualifiers after the Easter break under coach Mark Scannell to whom we give huge thanks. Like our girls, he never gives up on the teams.
