Our first yr basketball team competed yesterday in the All Ireland Basketball 1/4 finals against Ard Scoil Na Mara, Tramore.
In a tightly contested game, the team found themselves 11pts behind at one stage with a number of turnovers and missed rebounding opportunities costing them dearly. A crucial timeout followed by timely interceptions allowed the girls to slowly eat back into that deficit and finally push ahead. As the final buzzer sounded, the girls were 5 points ahead, and relief was felt all round as they secured their place in the semi-final of the competition.
Two hours later, they took to the court again to do battle with Kenmare in a physical and fast-paced game. We began the first quarter well, securing a nice cushion, but the second quarter saw that dwindle away. The Kenmare girls’ athleticism tested the Bandon team as they struggled to close down key players at times. However, the girls maintained a narrow lead throughout. Some strong team offence and linked passing finally saw them emerge as victors.
They will now take on St. Joseph’s Castlebar in the All Ireland Final on Thursday, May 14th, in the National Basketball Arena Dublin.
Colaiste Na Toirbhirte will compete at A level next year, continuing under the expert coaching of Mark Scannell.
